This mail not delivered to all

"Seniors received sign-up information in the mail." This is the claim Kevin Kiley makes in his Aug. 11 Representative Report regarding notification for the tele-town hall he conducted on Aug. 14. The event is described in the newsletter as containing, "... useful advice on how seniors can protect themselves against the fraudsters who disproportionately target older Americans." No doubt, this is an important topic of concern. There's one problem, however, with Kiley's assertion that seniors were notified via the mail – he didn't inform ALL seniors in his district. I'm a registered Democrat and squarely in the age demographic for this event. I didn't receive anything in the mail. I compared notes with my age-appropriate friends, and most who share my registration affiliation didn't receive a mailed notification. However, my friends who are registered as Decline to State or Republican (yes, I do count registered Republicans among my friends) did receive notification through the U.S. Mail. If Kiley is using his franking privilege, a privilege paid for with our tax dollars, to mail directly to his constituents, shouldn't that mailing include all of his constituents? I learned about the event through an email, but what about those seniors without email who didn't receive a mailed notice? Are they less prone to fraudsters? Do fraudsters check political affiliations before preying on seniors? I applaud the Congressman for focusing on this issue, even though a virtual telephone-only effort is a poor substitute for an in-person event. But don't claim to serve or express concern for your constituents while excluding those whose voter registration differs from yours. Barbara V. Smith Auburn Journal going 'downhill' The Auburn Journal seems to be going downhill in both its story content breadth and its usability by the public. It is no wonder the Journal is struggling to survive. I am suggesting that the Auburn Journal promote more advance notification of community events. Most of the time, the Journal only publishes a story about events after they have happened and many of us, the public would have liked to have gone to the event if we had known about it. The Journal sadly does not give advance notifications of events that are going to happen in Auburn and surrounding areas. I used to enjoy reading the crime logs, but now without arrestees' names, the articles are just not worth reading. What was the reason for dropping the names? The Grass Valley newspaper has many more in-depth articles about the community while the Journal is woefully deficient in its numbers of interesting articles. Joe Marman Auburn
