Football rankings: Folsom dominates on ESPN; Woodcreek wins big

High school football kicked off in dramatic fashion Friday night, as upsets shook the Sac-Joaquin Section and Northern California. Local programs made their presence felt, with several top teams rolling to statement wins while others shuffled in the Gold Mountain California News Media Top 10. Here's a look at this week's rankings: 1. Folsom (1-0) Last week: Def. Grant 51-13 This week: at San-Mateo Serra (Sat.) The Bulldogs put on a show in front of a national audience Saturday night, dismantling Grant in a battle of the top two teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Quarterback Ryder Lyons passed for more than 400 yards, spreading out the attack to Jameson Powell, Isaiah Williams and Rob Larson. Can Folsom get over the Serra hump this weekend on the road? 2. Oak Ridge (1-0) Last week: Def. Bakersfield-Frontier 40-7 This week: at San Marcos-Mission Hills Casey Taylor's Trojans made a statement with a massive win over Central Section powerhouse Frontier of Bakersfield on the road. Receiver Isaac Pierce racked up 91 yards and two touchdowns. Oak Ridge faces another tough test in Southern California this weekend. 3. Rocklin (1-0) Last week: Def. Turlock 35-7 This week: at Reno-Bishop Manogue The Thunder didn't look the part of a team breaking in three new offensive linemen. Rocklin averaged 6.6 yards per carry and quarterback Reeve Slone carved up Turlock for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns. 4. Twelve Bridges (1-0) Last week: Def. Christian Brothers 42-7 This week: vs. Reno-Reed The Raging Rhinos extended their regular-season winning streak to 21 despite breaking in multiple new starters. Quarterback Connor Frontiera threw for three touchdowns while Chase Whylidko steamrolled the Falcons for more than 100 yards. Reed will be a good gauge of how good this team is. 5. Granite Bay (1-0) Last week: Def. Rio Americano 45-17 This week: at Pittsburg Quarterback Dominic Cattolico was efficient, completing 9 of 11 passes. Sacramento State commit Isaiah Ene ran for two touchdowns, and the Grizzlies looked the part of an SFL power again. A good test on the road this weekend against the defending NorCal champ. 6. Woodcreek (1-0) Last week: Def. Jesuit 38-13 This week: at No. 10 Whitney A dominant performance by the Timberwolves has them moving up to No. 6. Woodcreek ran two offensive plays in the first quarter and both went for touchdowns. The defense forced seven turnovers against a Jesuit team that had high expectations. This might be the year of the Timberwolves. 7. Roseville (1-0) Last week: Def. Antelope 21-17 This week: at Oakmont Even without quarterback Mason Susnara, the Tigers found a way to beat an improved Antelope team. D'Marcis Gresham ran for 117 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Roseville will compete in a deep Foothill Valley League this year. 8. Placer (0-1) Last week: Lost at Casa Roble 46-30 This week: vs. Laguna Creek The Hillmen fell in a shootout against a strong Casa Roble team, but there is still plenty to be excited about with this group. Shaun Jones ran for 137 yards and two touchdowns, while Danny Sanchez-Harlow had more than 100 yards rushing. Placer should be a contender for league and section titles. 9. Del Oro (1-0) Last week: Def. Modesto-Downey 39-14 This week: Bye The Golden Eagles pummeled Modesto power Downey, which is coming off of three straight 10-win seasons. Quarterback Nolan Sauve threw four touchdown passes with Landen Parry and Brock Sherman providing strong performances. A clash with No. 8 Placer is on the horizon. 10. Whitney (1-0) Last week: Def. West Park 17-13 This week: vs. No. 6 Woodcreek The Wildcats stormed back to defeat West Park in a defensive slugfest. The linebacking core of Cash Stevens and Jason Taormino spearheaded the spirited comeback, while quarterback and safety Carson Floyd looked the part of a leader.
