Colfax scores 34 unanswered to top Colusa

Colfax's trip to Colusa on Friday night didn't start perfectly, but the Falcons' work ethic and playmakers eventually took over in a 34-14 season-opening victory. After some early miscues, which included a blocked punt that turned into a RedHawk touchdown, Colfax settled in behind the arm of sophomore quarterback Adam Amatangelo and the 6-foot-3 frame of receiver Josiah Rubidoux, who spearheaded the spirited Falcons' comeback after falling into a 14-0 hole in the first quarter. "Our offense really started to click once we stopped making mistakes," said Colfax coach Jason Stowers. "Josiah was pretty dynamic. He made some big plays and just showed a lot of poise." Stowers credited Colfax's resilience on the road to its hard work in the weight room and the lumps it took in close games last season. He said this team has a different feel and he knows if they continue on this path, they will be contenders again. "You could tell the kids have bought in," Stowers said. "It was just a matter of time before we stopped making mistakes and things started to click. The connection and culture this group has is something special." Rubidoux's highlight came on a deep vertical strike, where he sprinted under a pass and made a difficult grab in stride for a 40-yard gain. He finished with more than 100 yards receiving, which included a touchdown grab over a defender to help swing the momentum in Colfax's favor. Running back Graeson Howard also stood out, pounding the ball on offense and flying downhill at safety. Stowers called Howard the team's "enforcer" for the physical presence he brings on both sides of the ball. Stowers also praised the offensive line, saying they helped set the tone for the offense and allowed the Falcons to gather themselves. Colfax now turns its attention to another Northern Section power, East Nicolaus. Colfax's home opener will be played at Del Oro due to the ongoing turf renovations at the high school. Stowers said he was happy to get the win but wants to improve on things this week to make sure the Falcons look sharper. "What we want to see is improvement," said Stowers. "Fewer mistakes and more discipline with our responsibilities. The toughness and work ethic is there. We're confident they'll keep getting better."
