Gold Country Fair brings new attractions, special free admission day, and local entertainment

From trading cards to tribute bands, this year's Gold Country Fair promises to bring a mix of new attractions and returning favorites for all ages from Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 4-7, at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn. The lineup includes a trading card show, free admission opportunities, expanded kids' areas and a full slate of entertainment. The trading card show will take place all four days and feature appearances by former San Francisco 49ers Tom Rathman and John Taylor, who will sign autographs throughout the weekend with the exact times to be announced closer to the event. Gold Country Fairgrounds CEO Don Ales says he's excited to bring the card show to the fair, noting previous card shows have been a hit. "Every time they do a show here, it sells out," said Ales. "There's been a huge push in memorabilia lately, and this is going to be a really exciting addition." Fairgoers can also expect new attractions around the grounds, including a rock climbing wall, a redesigned kids area with rides for ages 13 and under grouped together, and a new peach-themed food vendor serving everything from shakes to pies. Ales said Friday afternoon, Sept. 5, will feature a special "Free Friday" promotion, with free admission for anyone entering the fair between noon and 4 p.m. Ales said the idea came from wanting to help families in a tight economy. "We know it can be tough for families to budget for events like this," said Ales. "This is a way to give them a chance to come out and enjoy the fair." Entertainment highlights include a Beatles tribute band Thursday night (Sept. 4), a Bee Gees tribute band Friday night (Sept. 5) and a variety of local country and rock acts throughout the weekend. The fair will also honor California's 175th year of statehood with themed performances. Other features include steam engine displays, a revamped still exhibits area, a new ag mechanics auction showcasing student-built projects and expanded beverage options with a new beer and wine garden. For those planning ahead, there is also a discounted presale of fair wristbands online, saving fairgoers $9 per person. With tradition and new energy coming together, Ales said the fair is all about community and he's excited to provide a weekend of entertainment for Auburn.
