2000: Woodcreek students raise money for Loomis teen's wheelchair

25 years ago Oct. 19, 2000 Bart Brunello of Loomis was born with cerebral palsy and now in his teens hoped have a new specialized wheelchair. Candace Dodge did not know Bart, but she raised $665 from her Woodcreek High School classmates to help with the effort. Bob and Murriel Oles were the Grand Marshals for the 22nd annual Band Review and Field Competition in Loomis. Kate Nitta was the field conductor of the host Del Oro Golden Eagle Band. The Color Guard members were Pamela Behnken, Sara Patterson, Samantha Vaughn, Stephanie Belotti, Jaimie Brown, Brigette Comrie, Shelly Kerr, Whitney Wygal, Melissa Fowler, Serena Walker, Trista Wardell, Betsy Williams and Darla Dunn. Gene Atwood opened his business, Fountains and Flowers, in downtown Loomis. On hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies were Chamber of Commerce members Henry Schneider, Jan Clark and John Lanigan. A Loomis man received a telephone call advising he was the winner of a Canadian lottery and needed to mail a money order for $10,000 to claim the prize. He took $10,000 in cash to Long's in Rocklin to purchase a money order. A concerned manager realized the man was being victimized and alerted the police. However, an Auburn man lost $35,000 to the same scam. During the sixth annual Cowboy Poetry and Music Fall Gathering in Loomis, the Richie Morgan Bit Collection will be on display. During 60 years of ranching as a cowman and bridleman, Morgan accumulated an impressive collection of California-style spade bits. His daughter, Merrilee Morrell, showed the collection to commemorate the art of the bitmaker and the bridleman. For those attending the Fall Gathering, Finders Keepers costume shop in Loomis had pieces of Western wear, including hats and gun holsters. 50 years ago Oct. 16, 1975 The art of bonsai was demonstrated by George Yamasaki. Bonsai is a specialized container gardening which seeks to create dwarfed and aesthetic replicas of plants in natural settings. At age 71, George cultivated bonsai for many years. Robin Ware was installed by her sister, Melody Ware, as worthy Advisor for the Rainbow Girls of the Penrhyn Assembly No. 211. The ceremony was conducted by Past Worthy Advisor Officer Barbara Lewis. Rocklin-Loomis Soroptimist members Virginia Rowley, Louise Allen and Marion Glover prepared for a Country Hoedown as part of the Bicentennial celebrations. Proud participants in the 4-H Project Preview Day were Gary Bowler, Susan Hempel and Jeanne Bowler, all members of the Placer County horse coordinating group. Yesteryear by Vivian Rasmussen: Nelthorpe and Son Hardware and Appliances celebrated its 60th year in business. The founder, Edgar Edwin Nelthorpe, was born Dec. 16, 1875, in Essex, New London, England. As a young man, he came to America and in 1898 married Martha Kirk in Janesville, Wisconsin, and son Lindsley was born April 27, 1900. In 1922, the family bought 22 acres on the Auburn Sacramento Road. In a few years, they sold their place and bought land on King Road. Edgar was a carpenter and built a number of attractive homes in the community. Then he decided to get into the feed and grain business in Loomis just after fire in 1915 that burned most of the town. Son Lindsley was in business with his father. Lindsley married Beulah Healy and two children were born, Rosalind and Edwin. On Oct. 9, 1942, Edgar died during an operation and the store discontinued the feed and grain operation. 75 years ago July 1949 Robert Sousa, 20, of Roseville was able to see again after several months of being blind. He developed cataracts after an attack of measles. A second operation in two months may also allow Robert to read once more. The grades of Bartlett pears used for canning were "Prorate Grade" to be used as halves, fruit cocktail and fruit salad. "Third Grade" may be used only for nectar and juice. Playing in theaters was "Sorrowful Jones" starring Lucille Ball and Bob Hope. Emmett Anderson of Tacoma, Washington, the new Grand Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks warned, "Communist imperialism may last for generations." Houseflies have outwitted DDT but have not survived lindane. It was not yet recommended for use directly on dairy cows but may be effective as a spray on the barns. When used, all milk processing equipment needed to be covered as well as feed and water troughs. The stork won over the grim reaper in Placer County, as there were 434 births against 194 deaths so far in 1949. There are more than 2,000 soil conservation districts in the U.S. helping a half million farmers with erosion control and increased production. George Coughran of Loomis entered 13 head of Duroc Jersey swine at the California State Fair. A highlight of the Livestock Exposition will be a parade of some of the best purebred cattle, horses and goats in the nation passing in a review in front of the grandstand.
