Nimbus Fish Hatchery reopens to public Sept. 1

The Nimbus Fish Hatchery and Visitor Center will reopen to the public Monday, Sept. 1, welcoming visitors annually from Labor Day through Memorial Day at 2001 Nimbus Road, Gold River. The facility will be closed to the public during the summer months from Memorial Day through Labor Day but continues year-round operations raising Chinook salmon and steelhead for the American River. The government-operated hatchery offers free public tours on the second Saturday of each month at 11 a.m., guided tours for school groups of 15 or more by advance booking, and monthly "Tot Time" programs for children ages 2-7 on the third Sunday at 11 a.m. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with raceway ponds closing at 2 p.m. daily. Visitors can also explore the grounds, raceway ponds and adjacent American River trail independently using self-guided materials available at wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Hatcheries/Nimbus.
