Empire Mine celebrates mining heritage with annual family picnic

Families gathered at Empire Mine State Historic Park on Aug. 23 for the annual Miner's Picnic, continuing a 130-year tradition that began in 1895 to support mining accident victims' families. The celebration honored the area's mining legacy and Empire Mine's 106-year operational history through live entertainment, traditional Cornish pasties, children's activities and costumed historical interpreters. A highlight featured a reenactment of an 1888 mine explosion, complete with period-dressed staff simulating rescue operations alongside local fire department personnel using vintage equipment. The Sierra Gold Parks Foundation partnered with park staff to organize the successful community event. Empire Mine State Historic Park preserves one of California's oldest and most productive gold mining operations. Located at 10791 East Empire Street in Grass Valley, the mine produced 5.8 million ounces of gold during its century-plus operation before closing in 1956. The 856-acre park features original mine buildings, the owner's residence with restored gardens and access to 367 miles of abandoned mine shafts. Fourteen miles of family-friendly trails accommodate hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Admission costs $5 for visitors ages 6 and older, with children 5 and under entering free. The fee includes 45-minute guided tours of the historic grounds, available first-come, first-served at the Visitor Center. The park's next family event, "Christmas at Empire Mine," will take place Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring holiday music, traditional crafts and visits with Santa.
