Auburn-area football roundup: Foresthill flattens Florin; Colfax, Bear River fall

The Nick Gleason era began with a victory for the Foresthill Wildfires on Friday night, as they rolled into Sacramento and dominated Florin 48-6. It was officially the Wildfires' second win of the season, as they won by forfeit the previous week against Adventure Christian. Foresthill scored 34 points in the first quarter and pulled away early. Senior quarterback Waylon Gossic was sharp through the air, completing 12 of 17 passes for 186 yards and four touchdowns while adding a rushing score. Junior Shayne Falkenberg had five catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns, while senior David Silveria had a receiving touchdown. The rushing attack was led by senior Vincent Navarro, who racked up 147 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Izaiah Ruiz added 91 yards and a score. Spencer Torres had a rushing touchdown. Defensively, Navarro had an interception, 11 tackles and two sacks in a dominant two-way performance. Torres made 13 tackles and had two sacks while Falkenberg had an interception. The Wildfires totaled six sacks and shut out the Panthers after the first quarter. Foresthill (2-0) has a bye this week and will host Vacaville Christian on Sept. 12. East Nicolaus 31, Colfax 7: The Falcons could not get their offense going Friday night against East Nicolaus, committing three turnovers and only amassing seven points in their home opener. The Spartans broke open a scoreless first quarter with 17 unanswered points in the second, sparked by senior quarterback Mason Taylor, who threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score. Jaxon Angland returned an interception for a touchdown. East Nicolaus pounded out 223 yards rushing, highlighted by Taylor's 57 yards and touchdown. Jimmy Melgoza added 52 yards on 10 carries for the Spartans. Colfax (1-1) will host Argonaut on Friday night. Truckee 41, Bear River 20: The Bruins faced a formidable opponent in NIAA powerhouse Truckee and stood tall. After falling behind 20-0 in the first quarter, Bear River played the Wolverines close the rest of the way but could not overcome the early deficit. The Wolverines racked up 309 yards rushing, led by sophomore Seth Molt's breakout 102-yard performance. Bear River fought to stay in the game behind senior Thomas Billingsley, who rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Sean Kinney had a game-high 120 yards on 18 carries. Ty Cleek caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Brock. Truckee's defense came up big with two interceptions and a sack while limiting Bear River's passing attack to 88 yards. Bear River (1-1) will remain on the road this week to visit Union Mine.
