Adult Pinewood Derby comes to Auburn for good cause

Remember building Pinewood Derby cars as a kid? Is that old racer still gathering dust in your garage? The Rotaract Club of the Confluence is bringing back that childhood nostalgia with its first Gold Country Derby, an adults-only racing event Oct. 10-11 at ARD Canyon View Community Center at 471 Maidu Dr., in Auburn. The event features three racing classes: Standard (5 ounces or less), Outlaw (5.01-8 oz.) and Vintage (cars built before 1990). Participants can dust off childhood creations or build new cars using kits available at Gold Rush Subaru. "We're a group of energetic professionals and service-minded locals committed to building a stronger Auburn region through fun, accessible events that bring people together while doing good," organizers said. Proceeds support local community projects in Auburn. Car inspection runs Friday, Oct. 10, from 5-7 p.m. Racing begins Saturday, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. Tickets include racing entry plus a taco plate, or spectator admission with food. Though only adults can race, families are welcome to attend; now it's the children's turn to cheer on their parents. Tickets and information are available through the Rotaract Club of the Confluence.
