Eagles can't slow Bradshaw Christian in 50-28 loss

Maybe Vista del Lago might want to get Bradshaw Christian off their football schedule. After winning their first four contests against Bradshaw Christian from 2012 through 2015, the Eagles have lost two games in a row to the Division 5 school. For the second straight season, the Pride has hung 50 points on the Eagles, winning 50-48 last year and then 50-28 on Friday night. The Eagles have proven the last two years that they can't stop Bradshaw Christian's mighty run game. A year ago the Pride rushed for 410 yards on the Eagles. This year, they did even better; rushing for 506 yards. Bradshaw Christian put the ball in a runner's hands 52 times and they averaged just shy of 10 yards a carry and scored seven touchdowns. They're run game is unstoppable; at least it is for the Eagles. Vista was within a score at the end of the third quarter, trailing 36-28, but Bradshaw Christian outscored them 14-0 in the fourth quarter. "We didn't stop the run," Vista coach Mike Struebing said. "I think the first possession of a game is telling. We had them stopped on fourth down and we allowed them to extend the drive with a penalty and they went down and scored. "Those guys did a great job of running the football; doing exactly what they wanted to do. "We helped them out on both sides of the ball with penalties. We had a number of holding penalties, block in the back, facemask, and a lot of sloppy play that certainly didn't help our cause." Jacoby More completed 18-of-26 passes for 256 and two touchdowns to Jack Cromwell before leaving the game injured. Christian Chavez completed 7-of 16 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown to Kyle Cromwell. Jack Cromwell also scored a rushing touchdown, although he only carried the ball seven times. "Our defense got us some stops in the second half to keep us in it, but Jack had two scores that were called back because of penalties, as we did our best to shoot ourselves in the foot," Struebing said. "That would have tied the score if we would have gotten the two-point conversion. The score probably looks bigger than it was because of that and because they had a late touchdown." Up next for the Eagles will be Granite Bay, who they will play on the friendly confines of their home turf, their first home game of the season on Friday night. "They've got a super talented running back and Granite Bay is going to come in here similar to Bradshaw Christian and be super disciplined and wanting to play their style of football," Struebing said. "Hopefully, we can get them out of sorts, stop the run and get off the field. Offensively, I hope we can continue to grow and develop."
