Football rankings: Top-10 matchups on the horizon

The first two weeks of the high school football season have already delivered statement wins, rivalry drama, and plenty of shakeups across the region. Last week several area teams tested themselves against talent from out of the area, meaning that there wasn't much movement in the Gold Mountain Top 10, but the pecking order is starting to take shape. Here's a look at this week's rankings: 1. Folsom (2-0) Last week: Def. San Mateo-Serra 56-42 This week: at Mission Viejo Folsom finally got over the Serra hump on Saturday, defeating the Padres on the road. On paper, the Bulldogs look like the best team in Northern California so far, but this week will be a much tougher test against nationally ranked Mission Viejo in Southern California. 2. Oak Ridge (1-1) Last week: Lost at San Marcos-Mission Hills 24-13 This week: vs Stockton-St. Mary's Oak Ridge suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of a Southern California power Friday night. The Trojans have a trio of defenders leading the charge in Jasen Womack, Aschlei Andrade and Brayden Molloy. This week's matchup with St. Mary's is a clash of two of the top five teams in the section. 3. Rocklin (2-0) Last week: Def. Reno-Bishop Manogue 28-23 This week: at Stockton-Lincoln The Thunder impressed for the second week in a row, defeating two-time defending Nevada state champion Bishop Manogue Friday night. Quarterback Reeve Slone threw three touchdowns, and Asher Runnion is emerging as one of the best defensive linemen in the section. 4. Twelve Bridges (2-0) Last week: Def. Reno-Reed 45-31 This week: at No. 10 Whitney The Raging Rhinos overcame a 14-0 deficit to improve to 2-0 thanks to a spirited effort from Connor Frontiera, Matthew Marquez, and Will Gant. No matter what is thrown at Twelve Bridges, it finds a way to keep on winning. 5. Granite Bay (1-1) Last week: Lost at Pittsburg 42-36 This week: at Vista del Lago The Grizzlies had a slow start against Pittsburg Friday night, but nearly toppled the defending NorCal champions on the road thanks to a three-touchdown effort from Isaiah Ene. Granite Bay is emerging as another contender in a deep Sierra Foothill League. 6. Woodcreek (2-0) Last week: Def. No. 10 Whitney 37-20 This week: Bye Josiah Melendez, learn the name. The signal caller was as efficient as they come Friday night, completing 17 of his 21 passes for 258 yards and two touchdowns. He isn't too bad with his legs either with 94 yards and three touchdowns on the year. Don't look now, but the Timberwolves might just be section title contenders. 7. Roseville (2-0) Last week: Def. Oakmont 34-13 This week: vs West Park The injury-stricken Tigers just keep finding ways to win, this time defeating crosstown rivals Oakmont. Roseville has had to test its depth early, losing its starting quarterback and one of its top receivers, but hasn't flinched. Another crosstown classic with West Park looms this week. 8. Placer (1-1) Last week: Def. Laguna Creek 49-34 This week: vs. No. 9 Del Oro Shaun Jones rumbled and thumped Laguna Creek for over 300 rushing yards and five touchdowns, while Danny Sanchez-Harlow had another 100 yard night as well. The defense made stops when it needed to the most, as the Hillmen are finding their identity. A big time rivalry against Del Oro this week will have the foothills rocking. 9. Del Oro (1-0) Last week: Bye This week: at No. 8 Placer The Golden Eagles can make a statement this week if they avenge last season's loss to Placer on Friday in Auburn. It will be a tall order though, but Josh Parry's team will be ready. 10. Whitney (1-1) Last week: Lost vs No. 6 Woodcreek 37-20 This week: vs No. 4 Twelve Bridges The Wildcats may have fallen last week, but their win over West Park is enough to stay inside of the top 10. Whitney was in a shootout last year against Twelve Bridges, can it upset the Rhinos at home this go around? On the bubble: West Park (1-1), Lincoln (2-0)
