1975: Loomis School weighs letting girls wear jeans

25 years ago Nov. 6, 2000 A mass will be celebrated for David Altobelli, 58, a native of Virginia, Minnesota and a resident of the Loomis Basin for 26 years. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. David was active in sports, coaching Little League, Five Cities Softball and Loomis School girls basketball. The Loomis Town Council approved John and Sarah Nitta's request to add recently acquired land adjacent to their nursery on Del Mar Road to their Williamson Act contract. The Del Oro High School cross country team qualified for the State Meet. The runners were Joel Bosserman, Tyler Daly, John Buescher, Eric Johnson, Scott Kirkish, Victor Oseto and Scott Cavanaugh. The International Order of Job's Daughters Bethel No. 3 initiated twins Jessica and Katie Barnes as the newest members. Their mother, Nancy Kirkpatrick Barnes, was an honorary member of Roseville Bethel No. 39. Evelyn Mikula was initiated earlier and Erin Drybrough affiliated with Bethel 3 as a transfer from the Bethel in Prince George, Canada. Among the teachers excited to teach eighth grade at Franklin School in Loomis were Bruce Waymire, Jann Neal, Greg Franchi and David DeLange. Among Bruce Waymire's art students were Mike LaBar, Andrew Keleda, Ryan Miller, David Rackham, Ross Doupnik, Billy Meyer, Ryan Leupp and Jason Piper. Bert and Carol Braun of the Cowpoke in Loomis welcomed all the participants in the 6th annual Cowboy Poetry and Music Fall Gathering. The couple introduced local artist Tommie Moller, who performed the prayer mound opening ceremony. Tommie invited anyone to "make their mark" on the fresh ceramic clay mound. Among those was Tom McCarthy engraving his "Rocking TK" Brand. One of the best-known poets to participate in the Fall Gathering was Pat Richardson. He was among those performers to recite a poem about Bert Braun, his being "The Feed Store." Dr. Richard Barsaleau recited a poem called "Riding The Long Trail," about the 100-mile Tevis Cup Ride, which Richard had been involved in for many years. 50 years ago Nov. 13, 1975 Services were held for Harold Pilliard, 55, a native and lifelong resident of the Loomis area. A lineman for PG&E, he was a member and past master of Penrhyn Lodge No. 258 F. and A.M. Harold was the son of the late Alfred Pilliard of Loomis. Funeral services were held for Betty Minore, 73, a native of Princeton, Missouri, and a Loomis resident. She was a member of the Golden Age Club of Loomis. Services were conducted for Tane Wakinaka, 76, a native of Japan and a resident of Penryn for 56 years. Services were held for Hallie Miner, 84, a native of Marion, Illinois, who lived in Roseville since 1943. Hallie was a 50-year member of the Lily of the Valley Chapter 85, Order of Eastern Star, Placer Shrine 67, Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem in Auburn, the Loomis Women's Club and more. In 1956, William Scott was one of the youngest sheriffs in the state. He was very cognizant of the younger generation and started "Scott's Toys for Tots" program, assisted by Placer County Deputy Sheriff Frank Nute. Roseville Square was the drop-off site for usable toys. The primary matter of controversy of the dress code for Loomis School was whether girls should be allowed to wear jeans to school. The two other schools in the district, Placer and Franklin, did not restrict girls from wearing jeans, but Loomis School had a stricter dress code. District Superintendent Byron Cook believed a child's dressing habits should rest with the parents. Over 13 Christmas tree farms stretched from Loomis to Alta. Placer County science teachers and 4-H leaders had their students and members participating in a sugar beet project sponsored by Spreckels Sugar Company. Beets grown by participants were processed at the Spreckles plant in Woodland with the refined sugar going back to the growers. For many centuries, all sugar came from the sugar cane. The supply of sugar was often slow because of piracy on the high seas and wars. 75 years ago August 1949 Funeral services were held for Frank Frietas, 63, a native of Portugal. He came to the U.S. in 1910 and settled in Placer County to engage in the fruit business. Under the direction of Jim Dobbas, a Kids Day program will be part of the 20th annual Agricultural District Fair in Auburn. One activity for youngsters will be the greased pit competition. Construction started on a six-unit motel located across from the High Hand fruit shed in Loomis. There was a serious situation in the California fruit market. Pears selling at $120 a ton last year were down to $40 with peaches being in a similar position. The fruit industry was built pre-war on an export market. The armed services and our allies took up some of the slack during the war. The picture currently was not very promising. It was ladies first during the drawing to determine the 500 nimrods who will be permitted to hunt antelope in a 10-day open season. Roy Rogers and Trigger starred in "Susanna Pass." With two polio victims in Placer County, March of Dimes funds will help with families of moderate income or less who cannot meet the high costs of the expensive treatment. The help is a gift, not a loan. Placer County was fast becoming one of the leading dairy counties in Northern California. Enriques Sanchez of Loomis was going to take a Greyhound bus when the driver sent him to the depot to purchase a ticket. Enriques was struck by an automobile as he crossed the highway and was given first aid by Dr. Barnes and sent to a hospital with severe injuries. Arlene Slocum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Slocum of the Loomis Bakery, was awarded a scholarship at Chouinard College in Los Angeles. F.A. Kramer completed negotiations with A. and B. Oil company of Auburn, whereby he purchased the former Richfield Oil Corporation bulk plant in Loomis. Kramer had operated the plant under the Richfield Corp. for several years before the company built a new plant in Auburn.
