Robots, rockets, creativity collide at Sierra College maker faire

The annual Maker Faire Rocklin will transform Sierra College (5100 Sierra College Blvd., Rocklin) into a wonderland of innovation Saturday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring everything from fire-breathing robots to sustainable urban gardens. This family-friendly celebration brings together inventors, artists, engineers and crafters eager to share their passion projects with curious visitors. Think science fair meets art exhibition meets technology showcase — all rolled into one captivating experience. Last year's event drew more than 8,000 attendees who encountered 120-plus makers showcasing projects ranging from 3D-printed prosthetics to kinetic sculptures. This year promises interactive exhibits, hands-on workshops and live demonstrations spanning multiple categories. Visitors can expect rockets launching skyward, robots navigating obstacle courses and blacksmiths forging red-hot metal. The digital fabrication area will buzz with 3D printers creating objects before your eyes, while the sustainable transportation section might feature pedal-powered contraptions that would make the Flintstones jealous. The faire welcomes makers of all types. Categories include robotics, wearable technology, biology projects, drones, homesteading arts, kinetic sculptures, electronic projects, traditional crafts like ceramics and glasswork, and even poetry readings. Musical performances will complement the making activities, with the main stage featuring 45-minute sets throughout the day. For hands-on learners, workshops offer 15-, 25- and 45-minute learning opportunities covering everything from vintage radio repair to 3D printing basics. The event celebrates the maker movement's core philosophy: that everyone has the potential to create, innovate and solve problems. It's about celebrating the human drive to tinker, experiment and build. Local makers from Placer and Sacramento counties will showcase the region's creative talent, though the event welcomes participants from throughout Northern California and beyond.
