Person found dead inside home engulfed by flames off American River Canyon Dr.

One person was found dead inside a Folsom house that was engulfed in flames Monday night, a culmination of an extremely tense event that involved a blazing house fire and reports of an armed subject barricaded inside. Fire crews, police and SWAT teams were on the scene to secure the neighborhood in the American River Canyon area and gain control of an urgent situation. The call came in around 5:30 p.m. with reports of an active house fire in the 100 block of River Ridge Way, off of American River Canyon Drive. A man with weapons was reportedly inside the home. When crews arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames; local crews were assisted by Sacramento Metro Fire Department crews and the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. Aside from fighting the fire and ensuring it didn't spread to other homes, first responders had the additional pressure of attempting to communicate with the individual inside the home while evacuating nearby residents and maintaining public safety. The Folsom Police Department said a crisis counselor was also on scene. At one point, helicopters from area news crews captured footage of a person wearing a bright reflective vest approaching the house, then surrounded by law enforcement and taken into custody. Folsom Police Officer Deidre McAuliff said this person was an "unrelated individual" who was wearing clothing that resembled emergency personnel. "This person's presence was not connected to the original incident and may involve mental health concerns," said McAuliff. Crews worked throughout the night as the scene remained an active fire zone. By Tuesday morning, Sept. 9, the scene was determined to be secured and safe. Folsom fire crews then conducted a search and found a person dead inside the home. According to Officer McAuliff, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office will release the person's identity at a later time. This was a tense, high-pressure situation for first responders. Officer McAuliff said the Folsom crews were grateful for the teamwork and multi-agency cooperation. "We want to thank all partnering agencies for their collaboration and support, including overhead air support and additional specialized vehicles from Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, and additional fire resources provided by outside agencies," said McAuliff. "This was a complex and tragic situation, and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of the community as we worked to ensure everyone's safety." The investigation is ongoing.
