Football rankings: Del Oro moves up, Bear River on the bubble

The local high school football picture continues to take shape as league play draws closer. Some teams picked up signature wins to bolster their résumés, while others stumbled against tough opponents. Here's a look at this week's Gold Mountain California Top 10, plus a couple of teams knocking on the door. 1. Folsom (2-1) Last week: Lost at Mission Viejo 52-13 This week: vs SF-Sacred Heart College Prep The Bulldogs suffered their first defeat of the season Friday night, falling to the nationally ranked Diablos of Mission Viejo. Folsom's hopes of a 15-0 season may be dashed, but everything that it seeks to accomplish is still in front of them. 2. Oak Ridge (1-1) Last week: Idle This week: vs Stockton-St. Mary's Oak Ridge was idle last week after returning from Southern California to play Mission Hills the week before. Friday's clash with St. Mary's might be the deciding factor between which team gets the nod as No. 2 in the Sac-Joaquin Section. 3. Rocklin (3-0) Last week: Def. Stockton-Lincoln 41-22 This week: Idle How is it possible that this defense keeps getting better? The duo of Dominic Coelho and Asher Runnion is becoming a problem that is putting everyone's offensive line on notice. Reeve Slone's connection with his receivers is enough to will the Thunder back to another section title. 4. Twelve Bridges (3-0) Last week: Def. No. 10 Whitney 42-17 This week: at Arroyo Grande The Raging Rhinos just keep finding ways to win. Will Gant and Matthew Marquez have shown to be impactful playmakers on the outside, and the defensive line anchored by Colton Hogge has left opposing offensive coordinators puzzled. 5. Granite Bay (2-1) Last week: Def. Vista del Lago 45-7 This week: vs Ponderosa The Grizzlies are showing everyone why they deserve to be discussed in the Sierra Foothill League picture. Running back Isaiah Ene is averaging 145 yards per game. Granite Bay can make another statement against a strong Ponderosa team this week. 6. Woodcreek (2-0) Last week: Idle This week: vs No. 8 Roseville The Timberwolves had the week off last week, which gave them another week of rest heading into Friday's Junction Bowl against crosstown rival Roseville. 7. Del Oro (2-0) Last week: Def. No. 9 Placer 49-14 This week: vs Palo Cedro-Foothill The Golden Eagles impressed last week with a rout of Placer thanks to a dominant defensive performance. Victor Suarez had a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception. Del Oro can pass last season's win total with a victory Friday over Northern Section power Foothill. 8. Roseville (3-0) Last week: Def. West Park 23-17 (OT) This week: at No. 6 Woodcreek Even without its starting quarterback, running back and top receiver the Tigers found a way to win on the road at West Park in overtime. Roseville keeps finding ways to win and you can bet that it will be extra motivated to knock off rival Woodcreek on Friday. 9. Placer (1-2) Last week: Lost to No. 7 Del Oro 49-14 This week: at Antelope The Hillmen were shorthanded in Friday's loss to Del Oro, but it was the turnovers that were costly for Placer. This week is gut-check time as the Hillmen travel to a feisty Antelope team on the road. 10. Whitney (1-2) Last week: Lost No. 4 Twelve Bridges 42-27 This week: Idle The Wildcats are clinging to a top 10 spot after falling to Twelve Bridges last week. Whitney will be resting up this week before facing Davis next week as a final tune up prior to starting SFL play. On the bubble: Lincoln (2-0), Bear River (2-1)
