Philip Frank Pomeroy 9/28/1924 - 8/28/2025

Philip Frank Pomeroy, born Frances Anthony Sekler, passed away in Penryn, California at 100 years old on August 28th, 2025. He was born September 28,1924 in Auxvasse, Missouri to Frank Anthony Sekler and Frances Mary Huphlett. After his father's death, his mother remarried and changed his name to Philip Frank Pomeroy. Phil Pomeroy served in the United States Navy from October 1943 to November 1946. He fought in WW II on a destroyer, the USS Wiley. He graduated top in his class from Gunner's Mate School in Seattle, Washington and served in ranks during his three year term. He also attended anti-aircraft training in Monterey, California and had orders to report to the USS Zellers. However, before he was deployed, he worked in an ice house where he dropped a 200 pound block of ice on his foot causing a severe break. Little did he know that this deployment would lead to an attack in the Pacific, where the USS Zellers suffered the loss of twenty-nine men. Phil was always grateful for that mishap, realizing that a broken foot may have saved his life! At the age of twelve, Phil Pomeroy showed great responsibility when he saved his money to hitchhike to Sacramento, where he bought a 16-guage shotgun. He had faithfully worked in the Newcastle fruit sheds, and although he was just a young boy, he took on responsibility beyond his years. He, on many successful quail hunting ventures, brought home food for his family, to include five siblings, Cevera, Billy Joe, Bob, Ben and Betty Lou. Even at such a young age, he was destined to be a man of honor, responsibility, and innovation that led to a successful contractor's business where he worked until his retirement. He restored a historic catholic church pastored by Father Quinn. He hand crafted the pews, and we are certain they still serve their purpose all these years later. Phil was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing in Tomales Bay, digging for clams and catching crabs in traps he had built himself. Philip Pomeroy was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean Pomeroy. He is survived by his three children: Philip Kim Pomeroy, Russell Gene Pomeroy and Tracey Ann Pomeroy, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. His memorial and interment services will be held Friday, September 26, 2025 at 1:00pm at the Old Auburn Cemetery at 172 Fulweiler Avenue in Auburn, California.
