Preparedness starts at home: Why now is the time to get ready

Each September, we observe National Preparedness Month – a time to pause and consider how ready we are for the unexpected. This year's theme, "Preparedness Starts at Home," is a powerful reminder that the first steps to safety begin with each of us, where we live. As an emergency management professional, I've seen firsthand how being prepared makes the difference between calm and chaos, between safety and danger. Disasters are stressful and costly, but preparing for them doesn't have to be. In fact, the actions we take today can save time, money and worry tomorrow. Know your risk Every community faces different hazards, whether it's wildfire, flooding, severe storms or even earthquakes. Knowing what could happen where you live helps you make smart choices about how to stay safe. I encourage you to explore the risks in your neighborhood and across Placer County. In fact, we can use your help to shape community priorities to reduce disaster risk by taking the Placer Hazard Mitigation survey online here. Make a family emergency plan Emergencies are easier to navigate when you already know what to do. Take the time to sit down with your loved ones and make a plan that covers communication, evacuation routes, pet care and where to meet if you're separated. Preparing now can help you avoid costly mistakes later – and it gives you peace of mind when the next disaster strikes. Build an emergency supply kit When disaster strikes, you may need to shelter in place or evacuate quickly. Having enough food, water, medication and other essentials on hand will help you stay safe and comfortable until help arrives. Build a "go bag" so you're not scrambling during an evacuation – it should have the basics like clothes, flashlights, important documents and chargers for your devices. Get involved Preparedness doesn't stop at your front door. Join with neighbors to become a Firewise USA® Community or get involved with your local Fire Safe Council. Together, we can create safer, more resilient neighborhoods. Check your insurance Finally, take a few minutes to review your insurance coverage. Making sure you're adequately insured before a disaster can prevent financial loss and speed up recovery. Preparedness isn't about fear, it's about empowerment. This National Preparedness Month, I encourage you to take one or two steps toward being better prepared.
