'Heavies' land in Lincoln for Kids & Trucks

The "heavies" took over much of McBean Park last Saturday, and a great time was had by all. In this case, the "heavies" were the largest pieces of equipment and apparatus owned by the city of Lincoln's Public Works and Public Safety departments, and all for the entertainment, and education, of our youngest residents (and their parents). The inaugural Kids & Trucks event was the brainchild of Lincoln Fire Captain Billy Hartley. He took it to new Lincoln Fire Chief Anthony Mejia, who gave it a quick thumbs up and coordinated with Public Works Director Matt Medill. The idea was simple, let the youngsters better understand those who serve and protect our city through the construct of play. And play they did. On and over and in the cabs of dump trucks, street sweepers, fire engines and police cars. They honked the horns and laughed youngsters high-pitched laughs. Perhaps the most fun that was observed was the youngsters assisting firefighters holding fire hoses that were aimed at spinning flags. Wet, you bet, but it was a perfect 80-degree, sunny day so no one cared about getting damp. The event was free, and it was apparent the approximately 1,000 youngsters and parents thoroughly enjoyed the three-hour event. Fire Chief Majia said, "The Kids and Trucks event gave the community a chance to see the equipment that keeps the city safe and running. It also provided an opportunity to meet the dedicated men and women who serve and protect every day." Adding to the festivities were ritual dances performed by the Danza Azteca Ocelotecame (jaguar warrior) Dance Group. Next year, who knows? Perhaps a Fire Department hook and ladder truck will show up.
