West Park throttles Cordova 64-14

After losing two straight games by one score, West Park's varsity football team went on the road and destroyed Cordova, 64-14, on Friday night to get back on the winning side of things. West Park needed to have a breakout game of sorts and they got one, as both the offense and defense had their way. Offensively, starting quarterback Jaden Jackson got the team off to a good start, as he completed 11-of-14 passes for 230 yards and four touchdowns to Isaiah King, Deacon Ogden, Abe Hunter and Madix Ryan-Newman. Jackson Hanan then came in and completed 6-of-8 passes for 118 yards and threw a pair of touchdowns to Ethan Uganiza. Third-string quarterback Arjun Gill finished the game off, completing all five of his passes, one of which went to Dane Andrew for a 23-yard score. "All three quarterbacks threw touchdown passes," West Park coach Jason Tenner said. "Arjun threw an out route to Dane Andrew, who also plays linebacker and special teams, and that was nice to see from players who don't throw and catch a lot of passes. They just went out and did what they work on in practice and they had fun doing it." All three quarterbacks combined to throw 22 completions to 16 players, which has got to be some type of a record for a high school game, not only at West Park but perhaps anywhere else. Eleven players caught one pass, while no one caught more than three. Along with his receiving touchdown, Ogden also had a pair of rushing touchdowns, as he gained 90 yards rushing on eight carries. Chris Swartz had an interception to provide the highlight defensively. "We performed better, but it still wasn't at the level of my expectation," Tenner said. "We had too many penalties, but we played better and cleaner in the second half. It's all about continuing to improve. Everybody played and we came out healthy which is nice." Next up for West Park is a home game against Destiny Christian on Friday night. Destiny Christian is 2-3 on the season and nearly defeated Twelve Bridges on Friday before dropping a 38-30 game. "Destiny Christian is huge up front and has athletes at the skill positions," Tenner said. "They've got a defensive end, Andrew Axtell, who gave us a lot of trouble last year. He's a tough guy to block and we will have our hands full with him. Destiny Christian doesn't have a lot of depth, but the players they have are good."
