Battle for the Belt a huge success

Friday night's Battle for the Belt between Vista del Lago and Folsom High's flag football teams, which also doubled as a Salute to Service game honoring first responders as well as educators, was a huge success. Put together by Vista del Lago head coach Aron Henderson, he said the night went better than he ever expected. "The game was great, but everything else was too," Henderson said. "I really did not expect that turnout that we had. We had a flyover from the Sac P.D., shout out to them. The Army showed up and helped out with the coin toss. The Fire Department was there and there were a lot of veterans. It was a great turnout and a lot bigger and better than I thought for it being a first-time event. "It was beautiful to see all the families there. The girls made posters and there were a lot of teachers there. It was absolutely a success, and it brought the community together." Oh, there was a game played as well, which Henderson barely mentioned he was so excited about the rest of the night, but the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs, 43-0. Vista quarterbacks Becca Lemos (three) and Brooke Ferry (one) and Taylor Dray (one) threw touchdowns to five different players: Isabella Curcio, Gabriella Azar, Reese Clark, Kamira Stephens and Lemos. Ferry and Mari Waiters also scored on running plays, while Dray, Clark and Stephens had interceptions. "Everybody got a chance to play and the families got to see their kids make plays," Henderson said. "It was really nice to see the kids make some plays in front of their families." It's back to work for the both teams this week. Folsom High, still seeking its first win, play road games at Whitney and Davis on Tuesday and Thursday. The Eagles play their biggest game of the year on the road Thursday at Ponderosa, the defending section champion. The Bruins are not the team they were a year ago, but are still undefeated in league (3-0), as are the Eagles (4-0). "It's a battle of the only two teams left undefeated in league," Henderson said.
