Healing, growth continue at Horses for Healing thanks to volunteers, community support

For nearly three decades, Horses for Healing has provided therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults with special needs in Placer County and surrounding areas. The volunteer-run nonprofit offers riders not only physical benefits such as improved strength, balance and coordination, but also emotional and social growth that can be life-changing. "Being on a horse gives our riders a new perspective, both physically and emotionally," said Program Director Marcy Schaffer-Egot, a PATH Intl. certified instructor who has led the program for decades. "For some, it is the rare chance to see the world from above a wheelchair. That simple shift builds confidence, independence and a sense of accomplishment." A program powered by volunteers Operating out of a covered arena in Newcastle, Horses for Healing runs its program two days a week with the support of dedicated volunteers and gentle, experienced therapy horses. Volunteers assist with everything from side-walking beside riders and grooming horses to helping with facility upkeep. Their role is essential to keeping the program running, as each Horses for Healing rider is typically supported by a team of three volunteers working alongside the instructor. In return, volunteers often form a deep sense of purpose and a special bond with the riders, horses and each other. "Volunteering gives me a chance to give back while at the same time interact with horses and horse people," said longtime volunteer Joanne Michaels. "I get to be outside and use muscles that had become quite lazy sitting at a desk for many years." Michaels also reflected on a horse's innate sense of empathy, and how quickly riders often progress once a bond begins to grow. With a busy fall ahead, Horses for Healing is actively seeking new volunteers. No horse experience is necessary – training is provided, and even a few hours a week can make a difference. An evening of music for a cause Local favorite Manzanita will host a benefit concert Saturday, Oct. 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lantern Lit Barn in Loomis, bringing their vibrant mix of folk, rock and blues that has earned them a loyal local following. All proceeds from the concert will benefit Horses for Healing, helping the nonprofit provide its therapeutic riding program year-round to children and adults with special needs. "This concert is not only a chance to enjoy great local music in a special setting but an opportunity to support Horses for Healing in its mission. Proceeds from the benefit will go towards providing our therapy horses with the excellent board and care they deserve, as well as the essential resources that keep the program strong," said board member Diana Welsh.
