Remember why there's a vote on Prop. 50

In a few weeks, we will be receiving the ballots for the Nov. 4 election. As a member of the League of Women Voters for many years, I hope all of our citizens exercise their right and vote! Whether you vote for or against Prop. 50, the Election Rigging Response Act, I ask to please remember why we are here. President Trump asked Gov. Abbott of Texas to redistrict his state and Gov. Abbott's legislature did just that. We now know that Missouri has done the same thing, and just like Texas, without input of their citizenry. At least we are given the chance to vote on this. Spending money on this special election, I've been told, is wasteful. I remind people when parties tried to recall Gov. Newsom no one questioned the millions spent then. In my opinion, this is about fairness and about saving our democracy. The job of our school board is to support the administration, faculty its programs and to ensure fiscal security. Most importantly, it should always have the best interest of the students at heart. When we learn the interests of the current board include taking positions on political issues we become alarmed. This includes a recent resolution against state Proposition 50. Now we hear the board is planning to engage in a legal contract with a national organization, Advocates for Faith and Freedom. Red flags are going up! Separation of church and state? Possible hidden legal costs to our district/money that needs to go to the classroom? These initiatives are counterproductive at best, disturbing and divisive at worst. As a 48-year resident of Auburn, proud parent of three PHS graduates and an involved community member, I am distressed at the direction of our current school board. Patty Pieropan Dong Auburn
