Vista beaten by Inderkum, 45-17

Vista del Lago's varsity football team played better than they did two weeks ago in a loss to Rio Americano, but not nearly well enough in a 45-17 loss to Inderkum on Friday night, arguably the favorite to win the Capital Valley Conference with a 2-0 league record and a 5-1 record overall. Vista (1-2 in league, 2-5 overall) trailed 6-3 after the first quarter, but the game got away from them in the second when they were outscored 25-7 and trailed 31-10 at halftime. "I felt the guys played really well on Friday night," Vista coach Mike Streubing said. "I felt we only should have been down 16-10 at halftime, as they scored twice late in the quarter and we had a turnover on downs late in the half. We threw it to Jack (Cromwell) underneath and he dove for the pylon, but I guess the referee said he stepped out of bounds. We had two other chances to score, but couldn't get in on the first one and took a sack on the final play of the half." Vista kicked off the scoring with a 34-yard field goal from Joseph Ahola and in the second quarter received a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jacoby More to Luke Roberts, which at the time made the score, 16-10. The team's final touchdown came in the third quarter on a 25-yard touchdown run from Cromwell that made the score 38-17. A turnover deep in Inderkum territory early in the fourth quarter hurt the Eagles; as if they had punched it in the score would have been 38-24. After missing several games injured, More returned at quarterback and played well. "I thought Jacoby played pretty well," Struebing said. "We turned it over twice on interceptions, but I think one was tipped. Other than having a little rust, I thought Jacoby did pretty well. "Christian (Chavez) was sick Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so he became the first quarterback I've ever coached to throw five touchdowns and not play the next week." The next opponent for the Eagles will be Woodcreek on the road on Friday night. It just so happens the Eagles play the league's top two teams in consecutive weeks. "Woodcreek has done a really good job embracing their coaching change," Struebing said. "They really bought in with Kyle taking ever and are playing good team football, which I feel is their strength. They've got a quarterback, a running back and a receiver who are doing a lot of heavy lifting and they've got 20 some odd guys playing at a high level together. I also feel that they offensive line is well coached."
