Woodcreek now 6-0 with win over CBS

Woodcreek's strong football season continued Friday night with a 52-7 victory over Christian Brothers. The Timberwolves made it look easy in this one, as the team arguably played the best game they played the entire season. "We've been talking about it for a couple weeks now, but Friday night was the first time we've put it all together," Woodcreek coach Kyle Stowers said. "We got a kickoff return for a touchdown from Jack Torrey. Our defense was solid, not allowing them to score until the fourth quarter. We controlled the game. Offensively, we had almost 300 yards rushing, I'm happy with how we executed and we had the best week of practice leading into it." Woodcreek opened the scoring with a 73-yard touchdown pass from Joey Melendez to Trace Murchison. Later in the first quarter, Brody Simpson booted a 32-yard field goal to put Woodcreek in front 10-0. The Timberwolves got two touchdowns in each of the next three quarters. In the second quarter, Melendez scored on a seven-yard run followed by a 13-yard run from Jeremiah Whyte, as the Timberwolves led 24-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, Woodcreek received touchdown runs from Melendez (65 yards) and Jaxson Karavian (54 yards) to take a 38-0 lead. In the fourth quarter, Jacob Young scored on a five-yard run before Jack Torrey ended the scoring with a 90-yard kickoff return. Melendez threw for 137 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 84 yards and two scores. Whyte, Young and Karavian all rushed for a touchdown score, while Karavian rushed for 120 yards on six carries, and Whyte gained 85 yards on 12 carries. Jack Torrey caught three passes for 46 yards. Murchison caught his only pass for 73 yards and a touchdown. "Jaxson was sort of thrown into the mix as a starter because Blake (Hastings) had a concussion," Stowers said. "I couldn't be happier for Jaxson. He's a back-up on special teams. It just goes to show you never know when you're name will be called. He responded exactly the way you hope a player will respond." The Timberwolves will host Vista del Lago (1-2, 2-5) on Friday night. "Vista is always throwing the ball around the yard," Stowers said. "They've played an extremely tough schedule. Every team they've played is a playoff-type team. We're going to have a battle on Friday night."
