Roseville pulls out an 8-0 win over Yuba City

Adam Reinking wasn't necessarily thinking he'd be in a scoreless game against Yuba City entering the fourth quarter, but that's where the Roseville High football coach and his team were on Friday night. A week earlier, Roseville scored 62 points in a win over Deer Valley, so the fact that the Tigers had yet to score a point against 3-3 Yuba City was a bit hard to believe, but here were the Tigers in a tight ball game late. Luckily, Jack Walker busted a 30-yard touchdown run about midway through the fourth quarter and a Garrett Wolfe two-point conversion gave the Tigers an 8-0 lead and that would be the final score. "That wasn't stressful at all," said Reinking, clearly joking. "Yuba City is a really good football team and a very physical team and they had a great game plan against us on Friday night. We didn't play our best game and I didn't call the best game, but we were lucky to win it." Possessions were limited in this one, as both teams had the ball twice in the first half and neither scored. Next thing you know, the teams are already playing in the third quarter. "They had a 16-, 17-play drive to start and we stopped them deep in our territory and got the ball left with about two minutes to go in the first quarter," Reinking said. "We drove all the way inside the 10-yard-line and then our drive stalled out. I should have kept running the ball. We didn't execute on fourth down and they snuffed out our pass play." While Roseville struggled to put anything together on offense, at least their defense was playing well, keeping Yuba City off the scoreboard. In the fourth quarter, the Tigers put a scoring drive together. "In the fourth quarter, we went back to doing really basic stuff, stuff we were doing in March and April, the most vanilla stuff," Reinking said. "We should probably do that a little more often because we leaned on our offensive line and D'Marcis, Peanut and Cole all had carries on the drive before Jack scored. Jack has been the best player in the area for a few weeks now. On top of the touchdown, he caught two passes for 22 yards and led us with nine tackles, three tackles for a loss and two sacks. "Jack had another monster game for us. He's been a man on a mission. He plays angry and physical and with relentless effort and energy and I haven't seen that from a defensive player in quite awhile. He's a great tackler; he's great in coverage and he can also get after the quarterback. He also plays offense for us. He's really stepped up." Justin Fischer also had a big interception late for the Tigers to close the game out. Next week, the Tigers play host to Nevada Union. "They run the Wing-T and they do a good job executing on offense," Reinking said. "They're big and pretty athletic and will be tough. We get every team's best each week, so this will be another test for us."
