Newcomers and Neighbors holding membership invite

Come find out more about the Newcomers and Neighbors' group at Auburn's Depoe Bay Coffee Roasters on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 10:15 a.m. and get a warm welcome, a free coffee and a dollar off any pastry. Just let the barista know you're there for the membership drive. What do we do? We've all read about the health benefits of social interaction and exercise, and both are available when you join Newcomers and Neighbors. The club hosts an annual picnic and a December holiday luncheon in addition to sponsoring the following popular interest groups: · Like to cook and eat? Join the Supper Club. · Enjoy a game of cards? There's Hand and Foot, Pinochle and Mah Jongg. · Reading your pleasure? How about the book club, Bookmarks? · Want to get out more? There's the group I spend most time with, the hiking group – officially named the Auburn Amblers. The club is a welcoming place. Nine years ago, I joined the hiking group and discovered a great group of people. As we walk, we talk. We share reviews of books we've read, films we've seen and recommend handy workers for a myriad of chores. While coordinating the hikes is now a shared responsibility, for more than 20 years the fearless leader of the group was Hazel Haase. Hazel picked the hike spots herself and sent out emails to remind everyone the night before. The hikes begin at 8 a.m. in the summer and 9 a.m. the rest of the year, on Tuesdays and Fridays. A huge thank you to Hazel who, by the way, is still hiking. Membership is open to everyone: individuals and couples, new residents or those who have lived in the area forever. Annual dues are $15 for individuals and $20 for couples, payable after prospective members attend a chosen activity twice. We are a nonprofit social group that has been around since the 1940s and is not affiliated with any religious, political or business enterprise. We'll meet in Depoe Bay Coffee Roasters' back room. Established in 2000, this popular local café remains a family owned and operated business with Nicole and Mike LaVigne at the helm for the past 12 of those years.
