It's all Lincoln in fourth over Oakmont

Oakmont's varsity football team got off to a slow start in the first quarter, came back to make it a game by halftime, and then imploded in the second half Friday during a 49-31 loss to Lincoln. The Vikings simply didn't play a full 48 minutes and it cost them a big win and a legitimate shot at a league championship. "We started the game off badly and fell behind 21-0," Oakmont coach Cory Wilson said. "We came back and only trailed 28-24 at halftime, but then our first four possessions of the second half were punt, fumble, interception, fumble. You can't win like that." After falling behind 21-0, on two touchdown runs by Mason Volzer and another one by Brock Galer, Oakmont settled down and put some points on the board. Malachi Alexander started the comeback with a 90-yard kickoff return followed by a four-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Stevens to Gavin Harder. The Vikings then recovered a Lincoln fumble, which led to Oakmont tying the score at 21 following a one-yard rushing touchdown by Harder. Lincoln scored one last touchdown about a minute before halftime on an Eli Duff to Volzer 13-yard pass, and Oakmont's Memo Lunar booted a 41-yard field goal as the buzzer sounded to make the score 28-24 at the break. The second half, however, or more specifically the fourth quarter, was all Lincoln. "We had some injuries on the defensive line, but Lincoln just picked us apart in the second half," Wilson said. "We also didn't help ourselves by giving them a short field with our turnovers. We put our defense in a bad situation." Lincoln outscored Oakmont 21-7 in the fourth quarter. Duff and Julian Defoe had touchdown runs sandwiching a 30-yard touchdown pass from Duff to Volzer. Oakmont scored the final points on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Stevens to Ocean Munoz. While Lincoln plays host to Center (0-3, -4), Oakmont does the same to St. Genevieve (6-1), a team from just north of Los Angeles. "They're a private school that's got a three-star quarterback," Wilson said. "They're a spread team and I don't know much about them but I'm expecting some sort of a shootout with them. We will see."
