Football rankings: Granite Bay, Woodcreek on the rise

As playoff positioning takes shape, several local powers are finding their stride while others are fighting to stay in the mix. From Folsom's march toward another SFL crown to Woodcreek's historic run in the CVC, this week's Gold Mountain CA News Top 10 showcases teams hitting their peak at just the right time. Here is this week's Gold Mountain CA News top 10: 1. Folsom (6-1, 2-0 SFL) The Bulldogs are closing in on yet another league title, but slow starts have made them have to sweat out a few of these SFL games. Folsom will face Whitney this week and Paul Doherty would love nothing more than to beat his former school. 2. Granite Bay (6-2, 3-1 SFL) Granite Bay's 11-point win over Jesuit has aged very well after the Marauders defeated Rocklin and Oak Ridge with their stout defense. The Grizzlies left no doubt in a 42-7 rout of Whitney, scoring 35 points in the first half and flexing balance on both sides of the ball. Friday's showdown with Rocklin will be a big one. 3. Woodcreek (7-0, 4-0 CVC) The 38-13 win over Jesuit just keeps looking better and better as these Timberwolves are out to their best start in the last 20 years. This week is for all the marbles as Woodcreek hosts Inderkum for the Capital Valley Conference title. Is this the year Woodcreek finally tames the Tigers? 4. Oak Ridge (4-3, 2-2 SFL) The Trojans find themselves falling after back-to-back losses, but get a break from nonleague play this week against Monte Vista of Danville. Oak Ridge always finds a way to play its best football in November and is shaping up to make a run at the Division I crown. 5. Del Oro (4-3, 1-3 SFL) The Golden Eagles were in the game all night, leading after the first quarter and trailing by eight late in the fourth. That's the closest that Del Oro has played Folsom since it beat the Bulldogs 43-42 in the section semifinals in 2009. That was back when the Golden Eagles had Bryce Pratt barreling over defenders in the backfield and Folsom was led by Dano Graves. 6. Twelve Bridges (7-0, 2-0 FVL) Twelve Bridges still hasn't lost a regular-season game with seniors on campus. That's 27 straight for those keeping track at home. The Raging Rhinos rifled off 35 straight points last Friday night to defeat Placer 49-24. The scariest part? Head coach Chris Bean and several Twelve Bridges players still feel they haven't played their best football this season. 7. Rocklin (5-2, 1-2 SFL) The Thunder made a statement by defeating Monterey Trail 35-14 and putting the game out of reach early. While the loss to Jesuit stings, Rocklin is proving each week it's still a force to be reckoned with in Division II and can shake up the SFL even more with a win over Granite Bay on Friday. 8. Roseville (6-1, 2-0 FVL) Roseville's defense has allowed 11 points over the last three games and has yet to give up more than 21 in a game. The Tigers are getting healthier and have their sights set on the Foothill Valley League crown, but they'll need to dethrone Twelve Bridges to do it. 9. Placer (4-3, 1-1 FVL) The Hillmen don't have any bad losses, falling to Casa Roble, No. 5 Del Oro and No. 6 Twelve Bridges. Placer has been banged up this year but still finds ways to plug guys in and make plays. Danny Sanchez-Harlow is a section championship level sprinter making plays on the ground and through the air. 10. Lincoln (6-1, 3-0 PVL) The Zebras fended off Oakmont 49-31 to stay atop the Pioneer Valley League. Senior quarterback Eli Duff was sharp again, passing for 236 yards and two touchdowns while adding another on the ground. Sophomore Mason Volzer continued to shine in a dual-threat role, totaling 76 yards and two rushing scores. Lincoln's offense piled up nearly 500 total yards.
