Roseville fall leaf pick-up helps city fight floods

The city of Roseville offers free curbside leaf pick-up from Nov. 17 through Jan. 16, 2006, to help avoid local flooding problems. The city effort assists in preventing fallen front-yard leaves from clogging stormwater drains and washing into creeks. Unchecked autumn leaves can create local flooding, disturb the sensitive ecological balance and threaten plants and wildlife as well, staff explained. Leaves cannot be removed from commercial properties, gated or other privately-owned communities, officials stressed. "Please keep in mind, Public Works crews cannot pick up any bags that contain other green waste, branches, rocks, animal waste or metal. If a bag contains any unacceptable materials, crews will place a notice on your door and leave the bag(s) in the front of the residence for you to remove," the city announced online. To determine whether bagged or loose leaf pick-up is available in your Roseville neighborhood, follow these steps: 1) Enter your address into the search box and the map at https://www.roseville.ca.us/government/departments/public_works/street_maintenance/leaf_pick__up and hit "enter," or view the larger map online at https://roseville.maps.arcgis.com/apps/instant/basic/index.html?appid=df202b002ee54029a6e8507c24eba1d4. 2) Click on the colored area of your street. 3) Follow the instructions shown for the front-yard leaf pick-up area. Public Works provides free pick-up of unbagged front-yard leaves in the city's most densely forested areas in the city central core (see map). While bagging in this area is permissible, locals in the unbagged area are urged to rake front-yard leaves into piles on the street in front of homes, keeping piles at least three feet from parked cars and away from storm drain inlets. "We'll come by with our 'Tink' machine and load leaves into a refuse truck for recycling," the Public Works Department announced. Crews remove leaves during a regular rotation that runs from north to south about every two weeks, officials said. In the wider Roseville area, curbside removal of bagged leaves is offered. Place only front-yard leaves in a sealed bag. Each bag must weigh less than 40 pounds, staff said. Sealed bags should be placed in your driveway near the curb or in the street away from standing water and out of the gutter. Pick-ups are Tuesdays and Fridays at 6 p.m., officials said.
