Film explores a transformed Mount Everest

Cinema at the State presents "40 Days At Basecamp" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026 at the Odd Fellows Lodge #7, 1226-½ Lincoln Way, in Auburn. With spectacular footage of the Himalaya as a backdrop, the film intrigues with its intimate portrayal of three climbing teams and their journey to the world's highest peak. The film is by award-winning documentary filmmaker Diane Whelan, whose "500 Days in the Wild" was screened by the Auburn State Theatre in March 2025 to rave reviews. At 18,000 feet above sea level and over the course of 40 days – the length of an average spring climbing season – 40 Days At Basecamp takes viewers through the challenging and captivating world at Basecamp, from the birth of the camp to its deconstruction. Stories of climbers, the history of the mountain and the devastating effect of climate change on the area are woven into daily life at Basecamp. In addition, this film provides a modern take on the transformation of Mount Everest from a revered, sacred space to the business enterprise and mountain theme park it is becoming.
