Bulldogs wrestle and win on aircraft carrier

How cool is this? On Dec. 23 Folsom High's wrestling team competed in a dual meet against Liberty High School in a match dubbed "Class on the Carrier," as the match was held on deck of the USS Hornet, stationed in Alameda. Whether a wrestler won or lost, it was a match none of the athletes will ever forget. The Bulldogs, however, didn't have many wrestlers lose, as they won their ninth dual match in as many attempts, winning 62-18, as the team won all their matches by pin or technical fall. Getting pins for the Bulldogs were Nox Cruzat (106), Jordan Yi-Berg (113), Kingston Cruzat (120), Orion Hill (150), Kayden Hoang (165), Chidubem Mmagu (190), and Colin Graham (285), while those earning technical falls were Logan Hara (126), Max Wong (132), Anthony Cruz (138) and Tak Hatano (144), as the team won another convincing dual meet. Prior to the boys wrestling, a few girls from Folsom got to wrestle with the highlight being Annika Scott getting a pin at 125 pounds. The night started with a few club team matches, as Folsom's Alpha Dawg Club kids wrestled some of their club kids, winning the match 42-10. On Saturday, Folsom competed in the No Guts No Glory Tournament held at Cordova High and came away with a first-place trophy, winning the tournament by out-scoring 21 other teams. Nearly all of Folsom's wrestlers placed in the top-six with a majority placing in the top-four to earn a medal. Champions included Angelo Cruz (106), Sadhruk Nagineni (113), Gabe Olveda (138), Wyatt Loftis (144), and Logan Ross (175), as Loftis was named the Lightweight Most Valuable Wrestler, as he won all four of his matches by fall. There were a couple of Folsom wrestlers who took second place with their only loss coming to their teammate in the finals, including Brady Silva (113) and Kayl Barragan (144). The girls took third place at the tournament, as O'Ryan Leven (115) and Keagan Brown won their weight classes. For the week ahead, the varsity boys will head to Brentwood to compete in the Lou Bronzan Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. Five varsity girls will head down to southern California to compete in the Queen of the Hill tournament hosted by Corona High School. Later in the week, Folsom's varsity and varsity 2 boys will head up north to Chico for the Joe Rios Memorial, while the girls will compete at the Queen of the Mat at Pittsburg High School, and the junior varsity wrestlers will be in action at Mesa Verde.
