California made jar, not the peaches

I try and buy American where I can, but these days it's getting harder. I want to particularly be sensitive what I put in my mouth. I got surprised the other day in our local Raley's supermarket. I was looking at Dole canned fruit and quite disappointed to find various fruits were labeled in really tiny print: "Product of China." If Dole and others are going to do that, why label the country of origin in such fine print? I found another brand of peaches, with the company website, and "California, USA" embossed in the bottom of the glass jar, and quite easy to read. But, in tiny print on the rim of the lid: "Product of China." I'm so glad America at least got a piece of the action. We make jars in California, and the peaches are grown, processed and packaged in China, and sold in our supermarkets. Perhaps this is not intended to be deceptive labeling, but it smells that way. This was not only found in the canned fruit products. Did you know that there are certain cookie products of Pepperidge Farm that are "Product of China"?The package looks the same as their other products made in America, but there is no American flag on the package to help identify what is grown, made and packaged at home. Perhaps the products outside America should have a different name, that sounds like the country of origin, rather than easily recognized names like Dole, or Pepperidge Farm, so the general public wouldn't have to try and find the fine print, or would that be considered profiling?Rich Walker, Meadow Vista
