Woodcreek wins, Lakeside falls in D54 Junior openers

FOLSOM -- Snowline took it to Lakeside and left the Granite Bay squad in the dust with a 6-3 victory Wednesday night in the first round of championship play in the District 54 Junior all-star tournament at Lembi Park.Snowline scored three runs in the first inning and then piled on more runs to take a 6-0 lead after three innings."We struggled from the first inning. We had a number of errors. We had more hits than they did, but we had the errors," coach Chris Cartwright said.A single by Ryan Macintosh finally got Lakeside going in the top of the fifth, and he scored on a two-out single by Brett Benoit.Lakeside's Arman Mizani led off the top of the sixth with a single. After consecutive popups, Whelan singled home Mizani and reached second as Snowline tried to throw out Mizani at the plate. Kyle Galbaugh followed with his own single to score Whelan, but that was it for Lakeside.Snowline will play Woodcreek at 5 p.m. Friday in the winners' bracket final. The winner will play for the championship at 8 p.m. Sunday.Woodcreek, fresh off a dominating run through pool play, opened the championship round by pounding Roseville West 14-5 on Tuesday. The first six batters had hits as Woodcreek scored six runs in the first inning."We chipped away every inning from there," coach James Penn said.Dylan Spezia and Nate Kaslan led the hit parade.Hank Pankratz pitched four innings and shut down Roseville West after allowing four runs in the first.Max Fereira started Roseville West's four-run first with a single. Following two walks and an error, Kyle Powers drove in two runs with a bad-hop single.Josh Copper and Darrel Doll finished for Woodcreek, and Scott Saylor made a diving play at shortstop to stop a Roseville West threat.Roseville West coach Chris Bracco said Adam Erickson came on to pitch in relief in the first and threw well against hard-hitting Woodcreek.Lakeside will play Roseville West in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday. The teams met during pool play with Lakeside winning 7-1 en route to going 4-0. That was Roseville West's lone loss in pool play."We saved one pitcher for sure (for Thursday), and we'll take it from there," Cartwright said.
