Journal unveils new e-edition

There's now another way to read the Auburn Journal online. The new e-edition provides a 100 percent replica of the print edition."Every single page including special sections, classifieds, A section, B section — even the (Gold Country) Fair tab, are part of the e-edition," Journal Circulation Director Kelly Leibold said. The e-edition is available by 5:30 a.m. each publishing day. "Rain, snow or shine — that's the beautiful part about it," Leibold said. "If we can't get to you with the print edition, you can read the e-edition."Current print subscribers can access the e-edition free for the next 90 days. Non-subscribers can click the free demo button for a look at the newest online version of the paper."If they decide they like it, they can call us and subscribe to the e-edition without getting a print copy," he said.Leibold, who is spearheading the project, said readers will find lots of special features, too."They not only can read the print edition online, they can click a button to listen to it," he said. "If you're working on something else or multi-tasking, you can click the listen button and have it read to you on your computer."Currently the e-edition may be viewed on any laptop or desktop. However, the E-Book section, which will be activated Sept. 15, will allow you to download it to a mobile device, Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader, Nook Reader/Nook Color, iPhone/iPad/iPod as well as a computer.The e-edition's user-friendly features give readers the option to view the paper in single or double-page format. Or click on Thumb for a thumbnail image of that day's entire edition. There are also quick links to main (section), comment, comics, classified, public notices, service directory and sports.Click on individual articles and they appear in a separate box for reading, printing or e-mailing to friends and family. Fill in the e-notify sign-up page to enter keywords of interest and you'll receive daily notifications of articles containing those words.Users can view issues as far back as 30 days, Leibold said."What I like best about the e-edition is it gives the flexibility in your schedule to read the newspaper when you're at home or at the office," he said. "If I'm traveling and have left the area on vacation, I can read the e-edition on my computer outside the area. To me, that's the biggest benefit."Another benefit is that out-of-area mail subscribers who receive the print edition from two days up to two weeks later through the U.S. mail can now view our newspaper the same day through the e-edition."And just as the print edition is for sale at local news stands, the e-edition may be purchased in single-copy issues. That feature will be available on Sept. 15 as well.There are added enhancements for shopping and services, too."You'll also be able to view the display ads," Leibold said. "There's a Marketplace feature in which it displays all our advertiser ads on one page that you can click on and view their ad in an enlarged format and link directly to their website.""Our goal is to provide even more convenience and flexibility for our readers," Publisher Todd Frantz said. "The full newspaper, news and advertising content, is now available on our subscribers' computers now or other mobile devices in the very near future, through our new e-edition. Subscribers will also receive premium content such as archives and other unique information pertaining to the Auburn area.
