Lois' Angels walk to fight ALS at Raley Field

Loomis residents Terri and Dan Tokutomi and Dr. Denise and Mark Jabusch recently participated in Walk to Defeat ALS at Raley Field, in Sacramento.The event was held to raise awareness and funds to help find a cure for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Denise Jabusch called ALS "a deadly neural disease that affects a person's ability to walk, eat, speak and eventually to breathe."The Tokutomis and Jabuschs have witnessed first-hand its deadly paralysis when ALS afflicted their long-time friend, Lois Kawata. The families' children were classmates at Newcastle Elementary School. She said the group wore t-shirts emblazoned with "Lois' Angels."Denise Jabusch said, "Upon diagnosis, an ALS patient is often given only two to five years to live, but Lois Kawata has survived more than twelve years with her disability." Lois Kawata's husband, Paul, said at her most recent medical exam, her physician was surprised to see how little her motor skills had decreased.Denise Jabusch said Kawata has survived against all odds because of her perpetual upbeat spirit, positive outlook and the support of family and friends. She said the group plans to participate again next year.
