Band members going to Disneyland to record

Lincoln High School band members are raising money for a spring trip to Disneyland.Fifty-five of the 67 band members will head south March to the happiest place on Earth for a workshop and time at the park, according to band instructor David Hill.The workshop is part of Disney's Magical Music Days."Disneyland has a recording studio behind Toon Town and the students will all go in (and record)," Hill said.While at the Disney recording studio, Hill said, band students will be given music they have never seen or played before and will "sight read" the music.After learning how to play that music, Hill said, students will record a song with a cartoon playing on a big screen behind them.The students will be given a copy of the cartoon and the music played on the DVD will be the band, according to Hill.Each student attending the trip needs to raise $400 to cover bus, hotel and other travel costs, according to Hill.To do this, the students are selling poinsettias through Nov. 17 and See's Candy through Nov. 27.The trip will help the 55 band members meet state standards for site reading and learning about the music industry, Hill said."Instead of me talking about it in class, they can live it in the real world," Hill said.Band members The News Messenger spoke with were more excited about the experience of traveling with their peers and being in a professional recording studio than about visiting Disneyland."It's just a really good opportunity to see how it works in the real world," said Erica Phillips, 15, a tuba player.
