Martha Carey September 9, 2005

Martha Carey, a long-time resident of Marbledhead and more recently a resident of Loomis and then Cool, California, died on Friday, September 9, 2005, as a result of injuries she sustained while training a horse.A registered veterinary technician and horse trainer by trade, Martha was fiercely independent and passionate about her work, family, friends and animals, and resolute in her every endeavor. From managing horse properties and a dairy herd, to practicing in various veterinary clinics with dogs and cats, and training horses, she loved not only working with animals but also helping people better understand them.Martha was particularly proud of her involvement in the Tevis Cup, an endurance ride covering 100 miles in 24 hours along the Pony Express Trail from Robie Park to Auburn, California. She was introduced to the Tevis by her close friend and mentor, "Doc" Barsaleau, a renowned veterinarian and avid supporter of the Tevis Cup. His inspiration and her devotion to riding and love of a challenge led her to train for, ride in, and complete four Tevis Cup rides on her favorite horse, Cadance.Martha graduated from Tower and Pingree Schools in Massachusetts and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She is the daughter of Madelyn Noyes Carey and the late W. Peter Carey of Marblehead, and is survived by her mother and six siblings: Tamsin C. McVickar, Pamela C. Haggett, Falda C. Rimel, Madelyn C. Simpson, Amanda C. Hogan and Peter N. Carey.Donations may be made to three charities in Martha's memory: the Robie Park Endowment Fund, thruh which a stone with her name will be permanently placed at the Barsaleau Pavilion in Robie Park; the Western States Trail Endowment, through which a mile-long portion of the Tevis trail will be named in Martha's honor; and the "Paw Program" of the Placer SPCA which is constructing a new building in Roseville. Gifts to the "Paw Program" will be generously matched by Dr. James F. Young, one of the veterinarians with whom Martha worked closely.
