Third-graders ask for help to write letters to soldiers in Middle East

My name is Nate Turton and I teach third grade at Trinity Christian School in Sacramento. The reason that I am writing is to ask for your help, and that of your readers. My class has launched Operation: Open Eyes, in an effort to share our thoughts and prayers with the troops who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a letter-writing lesson, each student wrote a letter to a service member. By the end of the lesson, the students realized that while their 15 letters would mean a great deal to their recipients, they couldn't possibly write to every overseas troop. They wanted to do more. As a class, we have set out to write letters to the editors of different newspapers around the country, asking them to encourage their readers to write letters to a serviceman or woman and send it to us to forward to the troops. We have set a goal of collecting 2,500 letters to send overseas. We are also asking that those who write letters also include an extra envelope and stamp to help cover postage. The troops love to hear about sports, school, or anything else that would remind them of home. Please help my class communicate to them that the country they serve is thinking of them often.
