Rocklin's U12s claim NorCal title

The Rocklin Girls Fastpitch Softball team's U12 all-stars claimed a NorCal Championship earlier this month, beating Nevada County twice at the Sacramento Softball Complex.Nevada had beaten Rocklin earlier in the tournament so it would have only had to beat Rocklin once more in order to win the title."Our girls came out fired up and Nevada County didn't know what him them," Rocklin manager Mike Mello said. Rocklin scored four runs in the first inning and added five more in the second, eventually winning 12-1. Rocklin then won the second game 11-5 to win the title and complete the all-star season.Rocklin's Keriann McClintock and Sarah Hood both went 2-for-3 with a double while teammate Kayli Shaw hit a two-run homer during the July 2 title game.Megan Mello pitched a complete game and had solid defense behind her the whole way. She gave up just three hits and two walks in that first game that was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.Rocklin picked up where it left off in the second game, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Hood highlighted the inning with a grand slam. Mello pitched another complete game, giving up four hits and no walks while allowing just one earned run."We told the girls in the beginning that they were the team to beat," said Mello, whose coaching staff included Curt Lerner, Derek Harris, Tammy Lerner and Michelle McClintock. "They had to believe in themselves and their teammates and no one could stop them. It happened."U-10Rocklin's U-10 all-stars also played for a NorCal title at the Sacramento Softball Complex on the same day as the U-12 squad.Rocklin was matched up against Davis and had to win just one game to earn the title while Davis had to win twice. This was because Rocklin had beaten Davis earlier in the tournament.Davis ended up taking the first game 2-1 and the second game 4-1 to earn the title. Rocklin's Winona Vigil pitched the second game and was effective but the Rocklin offense couldn't get anything going in the clutch. It was a similar story in the first game as Rocklin's Julia Gorman pitched well but Rocklin couldn't drive runners home.Rocklin's Halle Williams made several great plays at shortstop in the second game. Rocklin ended the all-star season with a record of 18-5.
