If asphalt plants so bad, why not Lincoln strip mine?

Recent articles have focused on the rejection of temporary Teichert mining projects in Meadow Vista and Cool. In these instances officials agreed that the negative impacts of increased noise, truck traffic and air pollution created a hazard serious enough for rejection of both temporary projects.In stark contrast, the proposed Teichert Lincoln strip mine is not four months long, but 40 years long, with permission to operate 24 hours a day. This proposed project will pollute our air so badly that Teichert will be required to buy clean air credits from other sources. The Lincoln strip mine would put an additional 700 truck trips per day on Highway 65, a mind boggling concept for anyone trying to drive through Lincoln. Even with the distant completion of the Highway 65 bypass, it's essential to realize traffic would re-enter 65 just south of the new Raley's shopping center.Our question is why is four months of air, noise and traffic pollution unacceptable for those citizens up the road, but 40 years of it is perfectly acceptable for the citizens of Lincoln?Why doesn't our health matter? Why don't our citizens rise up in protest? Why do our city and county officials expect us to breathe polluted air? Why do they expect us to deal with hundreds of additional trucks per day on our gridlocked streets?WPCARE has opposed the Teichert Strip Mine for almost 10 years. We recently won our case against Teichert in court. Teichert has now appealed the court's decision, and WPCARE members are once again reaching into their pockets to fund additional legal fees.It's time to stand up for Lincoln! Contact your local and county officials and let them know that you, too, reject the negative impacts of air pollution and traffic. We're heading back to court.
