One-stop shop for pet owners

JoAnn Musso knows there's nothing she can do about her golden retriever's terminal case of lymphoma. But at least she can do something about keeping him comfortable during the last few months of his life.So Musso, 70, took Hunter, who she's owned since he was puppy, to West Roseville Pet Resort for some well earned pampering. The pet resort is in the building next to West Roseville Veterinarian Hospital."If they become ill, they have the doctor right there next door," Musso, a Roseville resident, said. "I think that it's a good idea."Musso, who moved to Roseville from Loomis, is impressed how close together a quality hospital and a pet resort are.Nancy and James Reynolds, whose move to the new location was a thing of necessity, run the pet businesses. James' veterinary business outgrew its old location and now the Reynoldses run a one-stop shop for four-legged friends with Nancy heading up the pet resort."It's more for the convenience of our clients," James said. "We had a lot of people asking us, at our old office, where they could keep their animals and we had to keep referring them elsewhere."From medical treatments to aesthetics, the West Roseville Pet Resort and Veterinary Hospital's new facility has something for any animal lover.While the hospital takes care of the more serious operations, the resort handles day care, extended boarding and grooming for customers. There are no formal restrictions as to length of time an animal can stay at the resort.At the resort, the animals' days begin with an early morning walk and breakfast. Every two to three hours throughout each boarded animal is given personal attention and daily exercise."The concept was developed by Dr. Reynolds," said Mary Higgins, an administrator at the resort.At 5,500 square feet, the facility is divided in half between the veterinary hospital and the pet resort. But if customers choose to take advantage of both storefronts, payments are on one bill.Behind the staff-only doors, a miniaturized hospital features two surgery tables, ultrasound and X-ray machines as well as a full pharmacy.A hospital located just a few footsteps away from a resort holds numerous advantages for the furry patients."If we have a dog or cat that needs to stay here for a few days after an operation or a procedure, then we have that right here available for them," Nancy said.If a pet needs a "furcut" or full pedicure, groomer Amanda Downey, on the resort side, can take care of that."I love dogs, obviously," Downey said. "I just want them to be as happy and as pretty as they can. I think that people pay more attention to them afterward; no one wants a stinky dog."James has more than 20 years of veterinary practice experience.
