Here's short history of The Telegraph

The following items are from the Folsom Telegraph - formerly known as the Granite City Journal:The Folsom Telegraph, California's fourth oldest weekly newspaper, began publication in 1856, the year the railroad arrived in Folsom.The story of the beginning of what is now the Folsom Telegraph starts with a printing press, make unknown, but from its known history, rightfully named the "the wandering press," due to the numerous places it was moved to before landing in Granite City.The newspaper was started by physician and surgeon, Dr. L Bradley, of Hangtown (Placerville). In his Granite Journal (later renamed the Telegraph) of Wednesday, March 12, 1856, carrying the address "Granite, Sacramento County," editor Bradley had the following to say in his lead editorial and in the style herewith presented: STATE OF CONFUSION -- For the last two weeks we have been in the state of confusion, incident to packing up, moving, and re-arranging our press, files, type and the many appurtenances of a printing office, and as yet we are scarcely settled, so as to feel at home: but we now commence in the bustle of this new city, to get up the 10th number of our paper, which is hereafter be styled "The Granite Journal" and propose to lead off by a few remarks and statistics in reference toOUR TOWN -- which is situated on the south or left bank of the American River, in the county of Sacramento, about three miles below Mormon Island in lat. 38 deg; 42 minutes North long. 121 deg. 3 min. West, distance out from Sacramento 22 miles; at the terminus of the Sacramento Valley Railroad; in the heart of a rich mining region; with a fertile soil, and a most healthy and invigorating climate"ITS MAGINATUDE -- On the 20th of February, we counted the buildings, which had been commenced within eight weeks previous, for dwellings and business, and found them to number 259; from appearances, now, we should judge that the number of inhabitants couldn't fall short of 1,800. ITS NAME - Messrs. Judah, Bruce and Wilson having purchased the claims of Meredith and Brother, laid out the town in the spring of '55 and soon afterwards sold out to Captain Joseph Folsom. Upon the suggestion of one of the Meredith brothers, it was called Granite City, in reference to its quarry of rocks. After the death of Folsom, his executors gave it his name (Folsom). But the citizens have lately held a meeting and from their own choice, as well as from respect to the original proprietors resolved to restore the original name (Granite City).The following is from another article from an early edition of the Folsom Telegraph.The printing press on which the Telegraph was first printed, like most printing presses of that period, no doubt found its way into California by the long sea route around Cape Horn. Its first known location was at Coloma, site of California's gold discovery in 1848, where it was used to print the Miner's Advocate from the summer of 1852 to November of that year. The Advocate failed and the press was moved to Diamond Springs to print the Empire County Argus. When the Argus failed the press was moved back to Coloma on a second attempt to print the Empire County Argus but the attempt proved unsuccessful.Here the press would perhaps have remained if the editor of the Empire County Argus, Fred L. Snyder, had not drowned while on a visit to Lake Bigler (Tahoe) in July 1854. The traveling press was bought by Dr. Bradley of Placerville (Hangtown) from the Snyder Estate and over 18 months later the doctor moved it back to Diamond Springs to print the El Dorado County Journal. which lasted only 29 days, from Jan. 1 to 29, 1856. Following this failure and the news of the completion of the Sacramento Valley Railroad from Sacramento to what is now Folsom, Dr. Bradley moved his press to Granite City. As noted elsewhere in this history of the Telegraph, editor Bradley published his tenth issue of the Granite Journal at Granite (Folsom) Sacramento County, on March 12, 1856. (It was named the Telegraph in 1860). Being a weekly, he had already published nine earlier issues, but where or by what name is not clear, but possibly Hangtown or Coloma. The doctor had moved his press to the basement of the building at Sutter and Wool, where it remained until moved to larger quarters in "Whiskey Row."After the great fire that destroyed "Whiskey Row" the Telegraph moved back into the basement at Sutter and Wool.- Jack Kipp is a lifelong resident and former mayor of Folsom.
