Guzman, White set Folsom High track and field records

Robyn Guzman and Alex White set school records for the Folsom High track and field team at the Bella Vista Invitational held on a cool, windy day last Saturday.Guzman, battling both the weather conditions as well as the field conditions, threw the discus 103 feet, 1 inch to set the school record, taking fourth in the process. She also had a good day in the shot put, finishing fifth with a personal-best throw of 30-9.White, only a freshman, set a freshman-sophomore record in only her third 100-meter hurdles race. White won her heat in 16.97 seconds and then the final in 16.86, just one-half second off the varsity record.White also placed third in the triple jump in 32-6 ½ inches and was fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-4 ½. White teamed with Sarah Hockensmith, Jessica Schwartz and Lani Fontillas to place seventh in the 400 relay in 53.3 - not a bad performance for two freshmen and two sophomores.The Folsom girls did well in the 1,600 with Casey O'Day running a season-best 5:19 to place sixth, despite battling a cold. Suzy Soin finished in 6:26 and Jessica Miller ran a 6:11. Soin also had a good performance in the 3,200, running a personal-best 13:37.Jazmin White won her heat in the 200 and finished fifth in the final with a time of 27.67. She also placed sixth in the 400 in 1:04.81. Tori Burkhead also had a good performance, as she equaled her best mark in the high jump by clearing 4-4.Leading the boys was Jake Matthews, who placed third in the 1,600 and fifth in the 800. Matthews, with the help of a 60-second final lap, took third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:32. In the 800, his 2:02 was his second-fastest time of his career.Spencer Lillywhite placed third in the high jump, clearing 5-10, while Alex Ruffino (2:19) and Ricardo Segura (2:29) posted personal-best times in the 800.The junior varsity boys placed second behind Jesuit, in front of 33 other schools. Gianni Vernon-Reynolds won the triple jump with his best jump ever, going 42-3 ¾, a leap that would have been fourth in the varsity meet. He also won the long jump on his final attempt, going 19-11 ¾. Vernon-Reynolds also anchored the winning 400-meter relay team consisting of Nick Swanson, Dan Williams and Scott Shepard.Williams had a good day overall, winning the 400 in 53.81 and taking second in the high jump (5-10). He also anchored the third-place mile relay team consisting of Jeff Carlson, Alex Cortes and Josiah Roberts.Matt Baudendistel took third in the triple jump, going 38-7 ½ and was also third in the long jump with a leap of 17-3.Steve Roy place third in the high jump (5-10), while Cortes placed fifth in the 200 with a personal-best time of 25.10. Mike Starr finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 9 feet, while Carlson placed sixth in the 400 in 58.48.Matt Mulvaire had a pair of personal-best times in the 800 (2:27) and 1,600 (5:26), while Paramdeep Sandhu ran his best time in the 800 (2:35). Derek Colson also registered his personal-best time in the 1,600 (5:49) and ran a 13:06 in the 3,200.Roberts placed 10th in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 46.02.Folsom's week began with a dual meet win for the girls last Wednesday, as the Lady Bulldogs defeated Franklin, 70-64 and Elk Grove, 86-49. Winning events for the squad included O'Day (3,200 - 5:27), Soin (3,200 - 13:36), Fontillas (triple jump, 32-8), Lindsey Hutchison (pole vault - 8-6) and Kara Friddle (high jump - 4-6). The boys were not as successful, losing to Elk Grove (79-57) and Franklin (97-38). Folsom's lone winner was Nathan Namanny, who won the shot put with a throw of 46-3.Folsom's next meet is at home on Saturday at the Depth Charge Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.
