Woman killed in suspected street racing crash

A second grade teacher was hit and killed Saturday afternoon while leaving the Folsom Premium Outlets. She was the apparent victim of a street race, report Folsom Police officers.Susan McNew, 53, of Shingle Springs, was pulling her black Toyota Solara onto Iron Point Road when her vehicle was broadsided, reported Michelle Beattie, Folsom Police spokeswoman.A Dodge Stealth driven by a 17-year-old Orangevale teen was apparently racing a BMW 5-series vehicle just before it collided with McNew's car.When officers arrived on the scene, they began performing CPR on McNew. She was then transported to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where she later died.McNew taught second grade in the Buckeye Union School District for 29 years, the last 19 years at Blue Oak Elementary School in Cameron Park.She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Dawson McNew; her 20-year-old daughter, Kelly; and her 23-year-old son, Tim. Witnesses told officers the Dodge and the white BMW appeared to be racing westbound on Iron Point Road at 60 to 80 MPH - an area with a 45MPH speed limit - passing cars and changing lanes.The driver and passenger in the Dodge were transported to Mercy San Juan and treated for injuries. Both the driver of the Dodge and the driver of the BMW were arrested on suspicion of reckless driving and vehicular manslaughter. Their names were not released because they are minors. The Folsom Police Major Accident Response Team is investigating the collision.Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor.
