Steve Scott to coach basketball at Vista del Lago

Steve Scott enjoyed his year off from coaching a high school basketball team so much that he'll be coaching again this winter.Seriously, Scott loved his year away from the high school game. He coached his son Bryce's seventh grade team at Rolling Hills, watched his daughter, Haley, play on the junior varsity girls' team at Oak Ridge and enjoyed quality time with his wife, Darcy, but in the end he was ready to start coaching again.Scott, 50, has been named the first boys' basketball coach at Vista del Lago High, joining former Oak Ridge now Vista del Lago varsity football coach Chris Jones at the new Folsom school.Scott was surfing the CIF web-site back in January seeing what coaching positions were open, not even sure if he evened wanted to coach this season. He saw the opening at Vista and sent a letter of interest to Athletics Director Robert Reed and that started the proverbial ball rolling."I spoke with Robert Reed and then Darcy and the kids and then decided to officially apply," Scott said. "You don't get too many opportunities to open a brand new school and brand new program. It should be a lot of fun."Reed is obviously thrilled to have Scott at Vista del Lago. Scott coached the Oak Ridge varsity boys for six seasons, leading them to a state title in 2005. His teams compiled a 144-41 record and won four league championships."I'm really excited to have Steve on board," Reed said. "He's a dynamic coach with great credentials, but wins and losses aside, he's a quality person and a well-rounded coach. He knows there's more to coaching than wins and losses."We had a lot of quality candidates, but Steve looks to be a great fit at Vista."Vista del Lago will compete in the Sierra Valley Conference next year, meaning the gymnasium that Scott called home for six seasons will now be a road game for him."It'll be weird going there," Scott said. "Rob (Skaggs, Oak Ridge varsity coach) is one of my best friends. There will always be a rivalry with Oak Ridge and I hope they win every game except when they play us."
