Deputy involved in EDH shooting identified

The El Dorado County sheriff's deputy who fatally shot a man in El Dorado Hills Tuesday is Damien Walters, 26, authorities said Wednesday.Walters shot and killed 23-year-old Rajan Vaid on Highland Hills Drive when Vaid lifted what appeared to be a handgun, El Dorado County Sheriff's Department Lt. Kevin House said. Authorities later reported Vaid had held a Daisy Power Line 1700 BB air pistol.The BB gun was a high-powered model that can fire at velocities of 400-600 feet per second, as opposed to deputies' weapons, which fire at 1,300 feet per second, House said."There was no possible way to tell (the BB gun from a handgun)," House said. "We tried to get it away from him, and he wouldn't comply. He stopped, turned around, and aimed it."Walters, a six-year law enforcement veteran, joined the department in December, House said.Deputies received a call around 9:50 a.m. Tuesday from Vaid, who said he'd been drunk for four days and wanted to turn himself in, House said. "He said he had seen himself running over the heads of children," House said. "We thought something was kind of going on, so we sent out a welfare check." When officers arrived at the 2566 Highland Hills Drive home, Vaid ran behind a hill with a gun. "As he started to pull the gun up the officer shot him once," House said. Vaid lived in his parents' El Dorado Hills home, House said. He had been arrested Friday on suspicion of public intoxication and had previous alcohol-related arrests, authorities said.Vaid's mother told dispatchers her son had mental issues and was threatening family members, House said. --Cheri March
