Zajac and Graves team up for the Division III championship

Colfax's potent girls tennis duo of Kari Zajac and Heidi Graves teamed up to win the recent Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III girls doubles championship with four fine matches played at Oak Park in Stockton.Zajac and Graves defeated Dixon's Kelsi Anderson and Luki Valahova, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the Div. III title match to bring home gold medals."They did an excellent job," said Colfax coach Paul Phillips. "For not playing doubles all year they really had it together in the post season."Zajac, Colfax's number one girls singles player and a sophomore, and Graves, the Lady Falcons' No. 2 player and a freshman, opened the tournament by handing Interkum's Abriela Madrano and Ashley Bivenes a 7-5, 6-3 setback.In the quarter-finals, the Colfax duo tripped up Monique Martines and Casia Mello of Guistine, 6-0, 6-0 before stopping Vanden's Caroline Parworth and Janelle Selfaison, 6-4, 6-4 in a tightly played semifinal match.In other Colfax matches, Ken Jones and Mari Katsura defeated Orestimba's Eric Len and Mary Smith, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the mixed doubles first round before they were eliminated by eventual champions from River City, John Saefer and Vu Tran, 6-1, 6-4.Colfax's Kyle Graves had a tough first round boys singles draw and lost a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Patterson's Lillian Lasiter, a foreign exchange student from France.
