How ironic that it takes a natural disaster for us to demand that our government provide the least among us with rudimentary care (if indeed, the response can be called that). Where was our outrage over the plight of these poor communities before the storm?Hurricane Katrina blew the cover on our ignorance or, by neutrality, our willingness to allow the abject poverty of our own neighbors. Rather than discuss the vastly different realities between the haves and have-nots in our own country, Bush-Cheney-Rove have chosen these past five years to dodge these important discussions by dismissing them as class-baiting.The quote, "Let them eat cake," although popularly attributed to Marie Antoinette, is also a starkly appropriate reference to our president and his mother. Barbara Bush unwittingly showed how far removed she is from families far less comfortable than her own. Like her son and the infamous French queen, she is of an aristocratic mindset similar to when robber barons reigned supreme and the rabble were jailed for stealing food. Hail the Queen.
